Last Stop Series: Nightscapes

I’ve been using urban landscapes based on illuminated food trucks, store fronts, and other similar venues as allegory for the concept of home as an internal sense of identity and belonging and not solely a physical location. What began as a late-night visit to pick up food from a truck, I was surprised to see the streetlight that usually lit the area was out of order resulting in a normally ordinary view of a food truck to appear as if hovering and emerging from the blackness of space. Some might have regarded this scene in terms of isolation or foreboding, but instead I was struck with a sense of welcoming and belonging…in essence, home. Aesthetically speaking, I’m fascinated with the illuminated structures set against the rich darkness of the backgrounds as well as the interaction of light between figures, objects, and locations.
